The novel spans several temporal and geographical contexts and picks up on a number of problems. The protagonists live and work in Lviv and Berlin, travel to Venice and Cracow, explore their sexualities and change partners, delve into the depths of consciousness by working out childhood traumas. The counterpoint to the story of the Ukrainian gastarbeiters is the family saga depicting the Polish-Ukrainian village in the context of nearly the entire 20th century and dealing with national and social traumas. Told in a perfect linguistic polyphony, the novel articulates marginalised problems, questions stereotypes, provokes and encourages reflection.
