Literary Eastern Express

In the face of the ongoing war in Ukraine, our publishing house is committed to showcasing the rich cultural heritage of our eastern neighbors. We aim to provide Ukrainian refugees with access to high-quality literature and foster a deeper appreciation for their literary traditions.

Our initial focus will be on publishing works such as:

• “Czapeczka i wieloryb” (Cappy and the Whale) by Kateryna Babkina, translated by Bohdan Zadura: A heartwarming tale of a boy battling leukemia and his unwavering friendship with a whale.

• “Charków 1938” (Kharkiv 1938) by Oleksandr Irvanets, translated by Andrij Saweneć: A captivating alternative history of Ukraine in the 20th century, infused with elements of parody, irony, and satire.

Expanding our horizons, we are also venturing into the realm of comics, introducing a unique format to our publishing repertoire. One such comic will narrate the history of Ukrainian feminism in an informative yet ironic manner, challenging prevalent stereotypes.

To further connect with our readers and deepen their engagement with Ukrainian literature, we will host a series of author events. These gatherings will provide a platform for fans to interact with Ukrainian authors and translators, gaining insights into the creative process and the significance of translation in bridging cultures. We recognize the crucial role of translators as not merely conveyors of words but also as integral contributors to the literary experience. Our project aims to elevate the status of translators, acknowledging their role as “second authors” in shaping the meaning and impact of a work.

The books published under this project will be actively promoted at prestigious literary fairs in Poland and abroad, ensuring their visibility in both domestic and international markets. Additionally, we will engage with media outlets and bookstores to further amplify their reach. These efforts will strengthen the international circulation of Ukrainian literature and contribute to a more diverse and vibrant literary landscape.

The author events will take place during the East of Culture – Different Sounds  festival, scheduled for June 27-30, 2024, in Lublin. This renowned festival provides an ideal platform for fostering cross-cultural dialogue and celebrating the richness of Eastern European literature.

Our project aligns with Lublin’s pursuit of the title of the European Capital of Culture 2029.
