Halina Surowiec

Halina Surowiec (born 1981) is a literary historian, Polish philologist, and translator from Ukrainian. She has a long-standing passion for the literature of Poland’s former eastern borderlands. She is the author of the monograph Dream of Ukraine, devoted to the “Ukrainian school” in Polish interwar literature.

Her translations into Polish include On the Shore by Oleksandr Kondratiev and The Slave, a novel based on the television series of the same name that enjoyed immense popularity in Poland. She also co-translated Notes on Anna Akhmatova by Lydia Chukovskaya, among other works.

Surowiec has edited and prepared for publication the correspondence between Yevhen Malaniuk and Jerzy Giedroyc (1948–1963), as well as a selection of Józef Łobodowski’s essays A Poet Facing the Seismic Movements of History. She wrote the afterword to the first collected edition of Julian Wołoszynowski’s Podolian Tales. Before the Moon Rises.
