Ars Loci – the current image| exhibition catalogue
The exhibition “Ars loci – the current image” took place at Workshops of Culture in Lublin from June 1 to August 12, 2012. It was the first large-scale presentation showcasing the works of 41 artists connected to Lublin, including both established and emerging talents. These artists, some of whom had recently graduated from art schools, came from diverse backgrounds. They presented a range of experiences, including participating in numerous exhibitions and working outside the mainstream. The variety of media presented at the event was extensive, covering classic painting and drawing, graphics, sculpture, installations (including interactive ones), as well as video and animation.
“Ars loci” refers to the art of place, which is associated with a specific cultural circle that is connected to a particular physical territory. However, what defines this art? Does it have a unique feature? Is it the distinctive character of the local area, influenced by its unique spirit and essence, or is it a form of art that captures the universal nature of the broader world? Or is it more about a mental contamination, rather than a physical one, that occurs within the artist regardless of their physical surroundings? The “Ars loci” exhibition, presented in two parts, aimed to answer these questions. The first part, exhibited at Workshops of Culture starting from June 1, 2012, showcased the current state of local art. The second part, on display at the Lublin Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts starting from June 15, 2012, featured artworks from Lublin’s contemporary art collections.
